SUBJECT : 386 Upgrade Problem
DATE : 4/23/90
OS VERSION : 386
REVISION : 3.0
SHELL VERSION : 3.0
GENERAL INFO : I had a user that was upgrading a file server
from Netware 286 to 386, with over 100 users
defined on the 286 server. He had a problem in
which the uprgade utility (both 1.0 and 1.1)
would not move the login script to the proper
mail subdirectory. For each user, the Upgrade
utility created two mail subdirectories. One
directory was the same one as in Netware 286 and
the other one was the new subdirectory. The login
script would be moved to the old subdirectory but
the bindery would look to the new subdirectory
and would not be able to find it. The obvious
answer would be to copy the login file from
the old directory to the new one, but that would
be very cumbersome for 100 plus users.
To make sure that the customer was doing
everything properly, we ran upgrade several times.
Each time, we ended up with the same results.
PROBLEM : Corrupt binderies on the 286 file server.
SOLUTION : Run Bindfix on the 286 file server, down it,
bring it back up, rerun Upgrade.
COMMENTS : I have taken 386 calls for three months and never
heard of the problem. Then I had two different
sites with this exact same problem in one day.
In one case all I had to do was to run upgrade on
the mail directories. The other case, the user
had to reinitialize volume SYS on the 386 file
server and redo a full upgrade.
